Breed-Wise Dog Grooming Guide: Coat Care by Breed

Different dog breeds groomed at home

Every coat has its own rules. A Labrador's short double coat needs a completely different routine from a Shih Tzu's long, matting coat — and getting it wrong means either wasted effort or an uncomfortable pet. This breed-wise guide maps the common breeds we groom across Delhi to what their coats actually need, and links to a full guide for each.

Long double coats — the high-maintenance group

Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos and Pomeranians have long, dense coats that keep growing and trap loose hair, so they mat fast — behind the ears, under the legs and on the belly. They need a full session every 3–4 weeks plus brushing at home, and should be tidied with a teddy-bear trim rather than shaved.

Book breed-specific grooming at home in Delhi

Certified groomers, no cages, no sedation — from ₹800, and you pay only after the session.

Short double coats — the heavy shedders

Labradors, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds look low-maintenance but shed heavily year-round, with two big seasonal "coat blows." The answer is a de-shedding bath and blow-out every 4–6 weeks, never a shave — the double coat protects against Delhi's heat.

Long-haired cats

Persians and other long-haired cats mat quickly and dislike handling, so they need patient, no-sedation grooming every 4–6 weeks with daily brushing at home.

Short single coats — the easy ones

Beagles, Pugs, Indies and similar short-coated dogs are the lowest-maintenance: a bath, tidy and nail trim every 4–6 weeks keeps them clean and comfortable. Even here, Delhi's dust and monsoon ticks mean regular baths and anti-tick care pay off.

Whatever your dog or cat's coat, our certified groomers tailor each session — see packages and book on the Delhi pet grooming page.

Which dog breeds need the most grooming? +
Long-coated breeds like Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos and Pomeranians need the most — a full session every 3–4 weeks plus daily brushing, because their coats mat quickly. Heavy shedders like Labradors and German Shepherds need de-shedding every 4–6 weeks.
Should you shave a double-coated dog in summer? +
No. Double coats (Labrador, German Shepherd, Pomeranian) insulate against heat as well as cold. Shaving can cause patchy regrowth and sunburn — de-shedding is the right way to keep them cool.
How often should I groom my dog in Delhi? +
Short coats every 4–6 weeks, long or double coats every 3–4 weeks. Delhi's dust often means slightly more frequent baths, and anti-tick care after the monsoon.
