Pomeranian Grooming Guide: Double Coat & the No-Shave Rule
The Pomeranian's signature puffball look comes from a thick double coat that needs consistent care. The most important thing to know about grooming a Pom: brush regularly, and don't shave it down.
The Pomeranian coat
Poms have a soft, dense undercoat and a longer, standing outer coat that gives them their round shape. It mats behind the ears, in the 'armpits' and around the legs, and it sheds in bursts. A teddy-bear trim tidies the shape while keeping enough coat to protect the skin.
How often should you groom?
Every 4–6 weeks for a bath, blow-out and tidy, with brushing two or three times a week at home to prevent mats and manage shedding.

Pomeranian shedding and the "puppy uglies"
Pomeranian puppies go through a stage owners call the "puppy uglies" — the soft puppy coat drops out and the adult double coat comes in, often looking patchy for a few months. It is completely normal and resolves on its own; regular brushing helps it through. Adult Poms then shed their undercoat seasonally, and females often blow coat after a heat cycle. The temptation in Delhi's heat is to shave the fluff off, but a Pom's coat regulates temperature and, once clipped short, can grow back thin or uneven. The reliable way to keep a Pomeranian comfortable is a de-shedding bath, a full blow-out and a light teddy-bear tidy — never a close shave.
