A Real Pomeranian Grooming Transformation — At Home

Pomeranians look their best when the coat is worked with, not fought against. This little Pom came in overgrown and matting-prone, and left with a neat, even summer trim — cooler, cleaner and far more comfortable, without a clipper ever touching bare skin.

The situation

Under all that fluff, a Pomeranian carries a dense double coat — a soft insulating undercoat beneath a longer guard coat. Left too long between grooms, that undercoat packs down and starts to mat, especially behind the ears, in the armpits and around the back legs, while the face picks up tear-staining below the eyes. Through an Indian summer, all that trapped undercoat also leaves a Pom uncomfortably warm.

What the session included

The groom started with a thorough de-shed and brush-out to lift the loose undercoat, then a warm bath with a pH-balanced, skin-safe shampoo and conditioner and a full blow-dry — the single biggest step in getting a double coat to sit right. The groomer cleaned the tear-stain area around the eyes, scissored the coat into an even, tidy summer trim, and shaped the face, ruff and tail. Nails, ears and paw pads were finished off — the full styling routine we'd usually book as our Full Service package (₹1,499).

Why we trim and never shave

This is the part that matters most for the breed: a Pomeranian's double coat should be trimmed and thinned, never shaved down to the skin. Shaving a double-coated dog can damage how the coat grows back — a patchy, woolly regrowth groomers call post-clipping alopecia — and strips away the coat's own insulation against heat and sun. So the goal here was a shorter, cooler summer trim: neat and even, with enough length left to protect the skin.

The result
