Golden Retriever Grooming Guide: De-Shedding & Coat Care

Golden Retrievers are as easy-going as dogs come, but that gorgeous golden coat is a full-time job. Between heavy shedding, feathering and a love of water, a Golden needs regular de-shedding and coat care to stay comfortable and healthy — and, like all double coats, should never be shaved.
The Golden Retriever coat
Goldens have a dense, water-repellent double coat with a soft undercoat and longer feathering on the legs, tail, chest and belly. They shed heavily year-round with two big seasonal blows, and the feathering mats if it isn't brushed and trimmed. A de-shedding bath and blow-out clears the loose undercoat in one session — far more effective than brushing alone.
How often should you groom?
A de-shedding bath and groom every 4–6 weeks, more often in shedding season, with brushing 2–3 times a week at home. The feathering benefits from regular tidying.
Common grooming challenges
- Very heavy year-round and seasonal shedding
- Feathering on legs, tail and belly matting without regular care
- Floppy ears and a love of water making ear infections common
- Dead undercoat packing against the skin if not de-shedded
- Overheating in hot climates if the coat is neglected — but never shave it

Golden Retriever grooming at home
At-home grooming is ideal for a big, family-oriented Golden who's happiest in their own space. Our groomers use a de-shedding bath, high-velocity blow-dry and undercoat rake to clear the dead coat, tidy the feathering, and clean and dry the ears carefully. We never shave a Golden — the double coat protects against heat and sun, and shaving can permanently damage it. PetShine grooms pets at home across India — see packages and book on the Delhi pet grooming page, with more cities rolling out.
Managing a Golden's shedding — and why not to shave
Golden Retrievers are among the heaviest-shedding breeds, and the temptation in a hot climate is to shave the coat down. Don't. A Golden's double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and shields the skin from sun — shaved Goldens can suffer sunburn, overheating and, often, a coat that grows back patchy or with a different texture (a problem called coat funk). The right way to keep a Golden cool and shedding-controlled is a professional de-shedding bath and blow-out every 4–6 weeks, which removes the loose undercoat at the source, plus brushing with an undercoat rake at home. It clears in one session what weeks of brushing can't.
Grooming tips between sessions
- Brush 2–3 times a week with an undercoat rake, daily during coat blow
- Dry the ears after every bath or swim and check them weekly
- Keep the feathering trimmed to reduce tangles and dirt
- Never shave the coat — de-shed to keep them cool
